Solarcore® Textile: redefining thermal protection for next-generation military shelter systems
Solarcore® Textile
As military forces continue to prioritize mobility, rapid deployment, and survivability in extreme climates, the demand for advanced tactical shelter systems has never been more critical. Traditional insulated shelter systems often create a difficult compromise between thermal protection and operational efficiency, relying on thick lofted insulation materials that add significant bulk, weight and transport volume. Solarcore® Textile is helping redefine this equation through an ultra-thin insulation platform integrating NASA-licensed polymer aerogels into functional textiles.
For expeditionary military operations, reducing insulation bulk has direct operational benefits. Tactical shelters that can pack smaller, weigh less, and deploy faster, improve mobility for personnel operating in remote Arctic, mountainous and desert environments. Reduced shelter volume also enables more efficient transportation and logistics planning — critical considerations for rapidly deployable operations and forward operating environments.
Solarcore has worked with the US Army Research Labs to ensure key Arctic tactical military requirements for next generation shelter systems are being met and exceeded. The company's Arctic Textile system for shelters has been validated for cold-weather operation down to -60°F and designed to exceed thermal efficiency requirements at -40°F. Perhaps most impressively, prototype testing demonstrated that a shelter utilizing Solarcore® Textile was able to maintain greater than 90°F temperature differential from a severe cold environment using only 40% of the heating capacity. This reduction in energy demand has major implications for fuel consumption, generator requirements and sustainment operations in austere environments, where energy efficiency directly impacts mission duration and operational flexibility.
Additionally, compared to current systems with traditional lofted batting systems, Solarcore® Textile reduced thermal conductivity by 25% while simultaneously reducing insulation thickness by over 77%.
The core properties of Solarcore® Textile that excel in tactical shelters for austere environments - high thermal efficiency, light weight, flame retardant and compatible to extreme cold environments - make them suitable for a broad range of military programs, including military vehicle systems. Thermal protection is critical in extreme environments for various parts of the military vehicle systems - from battery systems, fluid lines to electronics and vehicle cabins.
As military organizations continue pursuing lighter, more deployable, and energy-efficient systems, insulation technology will play an increasingly important role in operational readiness. Solarcore® Textile represents a next-generation thermal solution that delivers protection from extreme environments without the traditional burden of bulk.
